2009 Line-up of Performers

The Canadian International Military Tattoo is pleased to announce the roster for our June 13–14, 2009 shows. Every year a stunning line-up of musical acts and entertainment is assembled for your enjoyment.

Tattoo Guard of Honour

The Guard of Honour will be formed by members of Canadian Forces Reserve units and regiments from Hamilton and South Western Ontario. All members of the Guard are Veterans of active service in Afghanistan, Bosnia and other Canadian overseas missions. The audience will have an opportunity to show their appreciation to these young heroes for their dedication and sacrifice, and to meet them after the show to thank them for their service to Canada.

Bands

The Windsor Regiment (RCAC) Band, Windsor ON – BIO

The Windsor Regiment (RCAC) Band can trace its origins back to the Essex Tank Regiment Band of the early 1930s. It evolved into The Windsor Regiment Band until 1970 when the bands of HMCS HUNTER and The Windsor Regiment joined forces to become the Windsor Militia District Band; in 1985 the Windsor District Military Band; in 1991 The Windsor Military Band; and in 2007 The Windsor Regiment Band. It provides musical support to the units of 31 Canadian Brigade Group. They have toured southern Ontario and Michigan, performing for royalty as well as at numerous civic and military events.

The Royal Regiment of Canada Band, Toronto ON – BIO

The Royal Regiment of Canada Band is the oldest permanently organized band in the Canadian Forces. The band, based at Fort York Armoury in Toronto, Ontario, has served in many different roles throughout the world since its formation in 1863. Today the band provides ceremonial support to the Canadian Forces and general public through its many ensembles – a colorful marching band, concert band, jazz ensemble, swing orchestra, brass quintet and fanfare trumpet quartet.

The Royal Hamilton Light Infantry (Wentworth Regiment) Band,
Hamilton, ON – BIO

The Royal Hamilton Light Infantry (Wentworth Regiment) Band was formed in 1866 and is the oldest enlisted band in Canada. The band has won numerous awards for military drill and musicianship in Canada and the USA. It has played for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, His Royal Highness Prince Philip the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales and the Governor General of Canada, as well as entertained the citizens of Hamilton for over 140 years. The band has performed in the Canadian International Military Tattoo since 1992 and is currently under the direction of Major Michael Rehill, CD, Mus Bac, KH, and Drum Major James Greve, CD.

Toronto Signals Trumpet Band, Toronto ON – BIO

The Toronto Signals Band was formed in 1926, and is one of the oldest continuing trumpet Bands in existence today. Although associated with the 709 Communications Regiment of the Canadian Armed Forces, they are not reserve soldiers, but perform as the Duty Band on a volunteer basis. Since the Bands inception, they have won more than 450 awards and have truly been acclaimed “Canada’s Marching Ambassadors”. The Band has performed in many venues over the years both in Canada and the USA, and this is their 3rd appearance in the Hamilton Tattoo.

Salvation Army Meadowlands Band, Ancaster ON – BIO

The Salvation Army Meadowlands Corps Band, formerly known as the Hamilton Temple Band, is a group of Christians who choose to proclaim the message of God’s salvation through the medium of music. Originating in 1883, the band was first known as the Hamilton 1 Band and is the second oldest Salvation Army band in Canada and Bermuda Territory. Later it became the Hamilton Citadel Band, and then the Hamilton Temple Band until recently, when in 2003, the church or corps moved to the community of Meadowlands. The band has performed in Northern Ireland, England, Wales, Scotland, Bermuda and the U.S. Purchase a recording at www.meadowlandscorpsband.ca.

Pipes and Drums

The Lorne Scots (Peel, Dufferin and Halton Regiment) Pipes and Drums,
Brampton, ON – BIO

The Lorne Scots Pipes and Drums (Peel, Dufferin and Halton Regiment) (bottom centre right) was formed in 1881. The Pipes and Drums of the regiment performed at the Edinburgh Tattoo in 1960 and 1970, and have performed for Her Majesty The Queen, HRH The Duke of Kent, The Duke of Argyll, Governors General, Lieutenant Governors, the Prime Minister, and various Premiers. The band has also toured the United Kingdom, playing at the Tower of London and The London Guildhall, as well as at various engagements in the U.S. and Ontario.

The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada (Princess Louise's) Pipes and Drums,
Hamilton, ON – BIO

The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada Pipes and Drumsis a component of the Canadian Army Reserve. The band has a history dating back to a Highland Rifle Company, formed in Hamilton in 1856, when many of Hamilton’s leading citizens backed the formation of a kilted military unit in the city—the forerunner of the present regiment. The current regiment came into being in 1903 along with the Pipes and Drums. The regiment served with distinction during both world wars. The Pipes and Drums had the honour of leading the Allied victory parade in Berlin following the surrender in 1945 in a scene reminiscent of one from the earlier war in which the Pipes and Drums of the 19th Battalion played the Allied armies across the Rhine. Members of the band are soldiers as well as musicians.

Dundas Pipes and Drums, Dundas, ON – BIO

The Dundas Pipes and Drums were organized shortly after the end of World War II, under the sponsorship of the Dundas Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, where it became a vital part of the community. In 1967, the band was reconstituted under the Town of Dundas, as part of the Canada centennial year celebrations. For over half a century, the band has been featured in parades, concerts and tattoos in and around the Region of Hamilton-Wentworth in Ontario. Since its inception, the band has maintained high standards of piping, drumming and teaching, competing in Highland games and bringing the traditions and love of Highland music to the community.

International Performers

American Originals Fife and Drum Corps, Washington DC – BIO

The American Originals Fife and Drum Corps were organized in 1991. In its brief history they have become one of the most popular and sought after musical organizations with a unique fife and drum repertoire of traditional American songs spanning from the Revolutionary War through the Civil War on into the music of the 20th Century. Selections from the Broadway stage, works of Moran Gould, and Benny Goodman, as well as English, Scottish, and Irish airs enrich the musical experience of this excellent group. The Corps has made well over 100 appearances at concerts, parades and festivals, and recently returned from an appearance in Europe. The Corps is located in the Washington DC metropolitan area.

Young School of Irish Dance, Rochester NY – BIO

The Young School of Irish Dance includes some of the most elite adult performers in the Northeast. The group has been entertaining audiences across the nation with their intricate footwork and dazzling choreography since the school’s inception in 1998. Based in Rochester, New York, the Young School’s adult dancers rank first in the region after their outstanding performance at the 2006 Regional Championships in Philadelphia.

Vocalist

Sarena Paton – Singer/songwriter, Hamilton ON – BIO

Sarena Paton's long-standing interest and involvement with the WWII Veterans prompted her to release an album entitled Remember, produced by J. Richard Hutt, in honour of the veterans and peacekeepers of the past and present, especially those serving in Afghanistan. Sarena is one of the founding team members of the Remembrance Day concert tradition, which takes place at the Ronald V. Joyce Centre (Hamilton Place) every year. Sarena's commitment to the veterans attracted the attention of Veterans Affairs Canada and she was invited to perform at the prestigious Senate Ceremony on Parliament Hill in Ottawa during Veterans Week in 2006. She has been honoured to sing one of her singles Honor Thy Fallen, written for fallen soldiers, firefighters, O.P.P. officers and RCMP, at a number of memorial services. Sarena's latest album La Carissima, features classical arias in Italian and Latin and breathtaking crossover compositions in Italian, Spanish and English, penned by Paton and top Canadian and American songwriters in the classical-crossover genre.

Tattoo Dancers

The Schiehallion Dancers, Hamilton, ON – BIO

The Schiehallion Dancers, established in Hamilton in 1968 by World Champion Highland Dancer, Sandra Bald Jones, have performed in Canada, the U.S., U.K., Asia and Europe; including The Last Tattoo in Berlin and the Edinburgh Tattoo in 1981,1986 and 2003.

The MacLeod of Lewis Celtic Dancers, Burlington, ON – BIO

The MacLeod of Lewis Celtic Dancers, established in 1968, specializes in Highland dancing and East Coast step dancing. The dancers have toured as guest artists with the Scottish variety troupe, A Breath of Scotland and have performed in Canada, the U.S. and Edinburgh, under the guidance of Marjorie-Anne Macleod Dent, assisted by her daughters, Jessica and Sarah-Elspeth.
