ENTRY/EXIT REQUIREMENTS—Effective June 1, 2009, Canadian and American citizens must present a WHTI-compliant document to enter or re-enter the United States by land or water.
The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiatve rules require most U.S. citizens entering the United States at sea or land ports of entry to have a passport, passport card, or other travel document approved by the Department of Homeland Security.
The Canada Border Service Agency Web site provides a Tourism Toolkit Fact Sheet that lists approved document requirements for both Canadian and U.S. citizens to enter the U.S. by land or water.
For more information on the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) visit the U.S. Department of State at www.travel.state.gov or the Canadian Border Services Agency.
